Canvas editing and shortcuts
Add, rename, reorder, copy, connect, and delete elements with the keyboard or the toolbar.
Chapters · 2:11
This guide sums up the editing features of the canvas. The keys and menus work the same way for structure elements, functions, and failures, so you can use them in steps 2 to 4 alike.
Keyboard shortcuts
| Action | How |
|---|---|
| Add a lower-level element | Shift + Right arrow, or Add Lower Level |
| Add a higher-level element | Shift + Left arrow, or Add Higher Level |
| Add an element on the same level | Shift + Down arrow, or Add Sibling |
| Rename | Double-click, or select and press Enter. Press Enter again to save. |
| Reorder within a level | Select one element and press Up or Down arrow. Lower-level elements move along. |
| Select several elements | Hold Shift and click |
| Connect or disconnect two elements | Select both and press Space, or use the connect button on the toolbar |
| Delete | Select and press Delete, or use the trash button at the bottom of the toolbar |
Missing links
An element with a red dashed outline is missing a link to an element on a neighboring level. Select it together with the element it belongs to and press Space to connect them. The outline stays as long as a link to a neighboring level is still missing.
Copy and paste
- 1Right-click an element and choose Copy.
- 2Right-click the element where you want to paste and choose the paste option.
- 3The copy appears below the paste location with a red dashed outline. Connect it to its higher-level element with Space.
Disconnect and delete
Pressing Space on two connected elements disconnects them. Because lower-level links can be removed too, a confirmation dialog appears first. Deleting also works on several elements at once, and a confirmation dialog shows what will be removed.
