What is a DFMEA?

A Design FMEA (DFMEA) is a structured method for analyzing how a product design could fail to meet its intended function or requirements. It is performed early in development — while the design can still be changed at low cost — and is owned by the design team. For each potential failure mode, the team identifies the effects, the causes rooted in the design, and the prevention and detection controls in place, then rates the risk to decide where to act first.

Under the AIAG-VDA FMEA handbook, a DFMEA follows a seven-step method: planning and preparation, structure analysis, function analysis, failure analysis, risk analysis, optimization, and documentation of results.
