DFMEA vs PFMEA: What’s the Difference?
DFMEA (Design FMEA) analyzes potential failure modes in a product design, while PFMEA (Process FMEA) analyzes failure modes in the manufacturing or assembly process. Both follow the AIAG-VDA structure and use the same Action Priority tables, but they differ in scope, ownership, and the causes they examine.

What is DFMEA?
A Design FMEA examines how a product could fail to meet its intended function or requirements because of a design weakness. It is performed early, while the design can still be changed cheaply, and is owned by the design team. Inputs typically include a boundary diagram, function analysis, and a parameter (P-) diagram.
What is PFMEA?
A Process FMEA examines how the manufacturing or assembly process could fail to produce the design as intended. Causes are framed around the 4M+E (Man, Machine, Material, Method, Environment), and the analysis is owned by the process/manufacturing team. The main input is the process flow diagram.
How do DFMEA and PFMEA connect?
They are complementary, not competing. The DFMEA is usually done first; its outputs (for example, special characteristics and severity ratings) flow down as inputs to the PFMEA. Keeping the two linked avoids gaps where a design risk is never controlled in the process. Both use the AIAG-VDA seven-step method and the same Severity, Occurrence, and Detection scales to compute Action Priority (High / Medium / Low), which replaced the older RPN.
