AIAG-VDA FMEA: The 7-Step Approach
The AIAG-VDA FMEA is the harmonized Failure Mode and Effects Analysis standard jointly published by AIAG and VDA in 2019. It defines a structured 7-step method for DFMEA, PFMEA, and Supplemental FMEA-MSR, and prioritizes risk with Action Priority (High / Medium / Low) instead of the older Risk Priority Number (RPN).
AIAG vs VDA: why they merged
AIAG (Automotive Industry Action Group, North America) and VDA (Verband der Automobilindustrie, Germany) historically maintained two different FMEA methods. Suppliers shipping to both markets had to keep two formats. The AIAG & VDA FMEA Handbook (First Edition, 2019) merged them into one harmonized standard — a single 7-step approach with structure, function, and failure analysis, and a common Action Priority scheme — so "AIAG FMEA" and "VDA FMEA" now refer to the same handbook.
The 7 steps

Step 1 — Planning & Preparation
Define the scope, boundaries, and plan for the analysis using the 5T (InTent, Timing, Team, Tasks, Tools) so everyone agrees on what the FMEA covers.

Step 2 — Structure Analysis
Break the system into its elements and visualize them — system, subsystem, and component for a DFMEA, or process steps and work elements for a PFMEA.

Step 3 — Function Analysis
Assign a function and requirement to each structure element and show how the functions relate, forming a function network.

Step 4 — Failure Analysis
For each function, identify the failure mode, failure effect, and failure cause, and link them into failure chains.

Step 5 — Risk Analysis
Rate Severity (S), Occurrence (O), and Detection (D), document current prevention and detection controls, and derive the Action Priority (High / Medium / Low).

Step 6 — Optimization
Define and assign improvement actions to reduce risk on High and Medium items, then re-evaluate S, O, and D to confirm the priority dropped.

Step 7 — Results Documentation
Summarize the analysis, the actions taken, and the residual risk so the result can be communicated and kept as a record.
What changed: RPN → Action Priority
The biggest change in the AIAG-VDA handbook is risk evaluation. The old Risk Priority Number multiplied S × O × D into a single 1–1000 score, where very different risks could share the same number and a high-severity item could hide behind a low score. Action Priority instead looks up the S/O/D combination in a fixed table and returns High, Medium, or Low, weighting Severity most heavily for consistent, defensible priorities.
