What is a PFMEA?
A Process FMEA (PFMEA) is a structured method for analyzing how a manufacturing or assembly process could fail to produce the design as intended. Where a Design FMEA looks at the product, the PFMEA looks at each step of the process that makes it. For every process step, the team identifies potential failure modes, their effects on the product and the customer, the process causes, and the controls that prevent or detect them.
PFMEA causes are usually framed around 4M+E — Man, Machine, Material, Method, and Environment. Like the DFMEA, a Process FMEA follows the AIAG-VDA seven-step method and is owned by the process or manufacturing engineering team, with input from quality.
